NBC Spins 911
Revisit that momentous day now that the smoke has cleared. This is a review of taped footage of NBC-TV News coverage of the September 11, 2001 event from about 10:30 AM New York time until 2:00 PM, when officials began declaring a sort of All Clear. You'll never read this review in TV Guide. Did NBC give us the news or a brainwash? One advantage in switching on your VCR for an event like 911 is that you may capture some spontaneous "on the ground" reporting later forgotten. Such on-the-grounds were rare at NBC that day, and they were rudely interrupted and even blithely ignored by the anchors if the content did not fit into the network's "operating theories." But here are some revealing transcripts, including NBC's Pat Dawson reporting on the World Trade Center collapse and on his interview with NYC Fire Safety Chief, Albert Perry, who said explosives were planted inside the tower (Tom Brokaw: no comment). Here, too, are the obscure official voices from the national-security establishment that NBC trotted out to interpret the event. Were they scripted? Can we believe any of this?
